Mold is typically a problem that affects new homes that are not inspected properly and homes that have not been maintained well over time. 1. A Pungent Odor

Mold usually goes unnoticed because it is hidden in certain crevices or areas of the home that are not frequented. With that, the best way to realize the existence of mold is to pay attention to the type of odor in the home. Mold will usually emit a musty or earthy smell.

2. High Humidity in the Home

All molds require a high humidity level to survive. If you have a pungent odor in the home and if your home is particularly humid, then it is highly likely that you have mold. Homes with high humidity usually do not have the proper ventilation to keep the humid air out and as a result, the water in the air begins to sit and allows the mold to grow. Another reason for high humidity is a water leak or flood.

3. Water Stains

Another sign of mold is water stains in your home. The water stains may appear on the roof, the floors, and the walls. Where there are water stains, damaged materials and dampness can occur. As a result, the moist area can turn into mold and mildew that will grow over time.

4. Health Issues

Mold is extremely hazardous for your health. Those who have mold in their homes will typically experience health problems such as exacerbated asthma, constant coughing, headaches, eye irritation, and skin itchiness. For those who have existing health problems, the mold is even more problematic. Mold spores tend to infiltrate the lungs and lead one to experience severe difficulty breathing.

5. Seeing Mold

The most apparent way to notice that you have mold in your home is to see the mold. Mold can come in different colors and it will usually appear on wet or damp surfaces. Over time, if the mold is not taken care of, the mold will spread over the area and cover the entire surface of the wall, floor, or roof. If you suspect there is mold in an area but cannot see the mold, then it is probably hidden behind the wall or any covering wallpaper.
